Independence Day 2022: 124th Year of Being a Free Country
The Philippines celebrates Araw ng Kasarinlan, or "Day of Freedom," on June 12 each year to commemorate the anniversary of the country's declaration of independence from Spain in 1898. Our nation's birthday has arrived. Throughout the nation's history, the day of commemoration of war and love has changed. Independence Day is a national holiday where many people, including government officials, employees, and students, participate in parades across the country. It's all about the presidential motorcade in Manila, which includes a speech and a 21-gun salute from the country's president. Parks and shopping malls are popular daytime destinations for many Filipinos. Many Filipinos who live outside of the country also celebrate the country's independence day.
It has been part of the Spanish Empire since about 1630. In 1896, a secret group known as "Katipunan," which was made up of Filipino independence activists, was discovered. As a result, the fight for independence was officially launched. An agreement had been reached by 1897, with both sides agreeing to a truce in which revolutionaries would accept exile outside of the Philippines. During the Spanish-American War, the United States provided backing to the independence movement, which allowed the rebel leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, to return from exile and rally local Filipino support. In Kawit, Cavite, Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent on June 12, 1898, ending the Spanish colonial era that had lasted more than three centuries.
In exchange for twenty million dollars, Spain agreed to hand over the Philippines to the United States under the Paris Treaty. It wasn't until the following year that some Filipinos believed that the end of Spanish authority was just the beginning of the Philippine–American War. Because of this, the American occupation of the Philippines with limited self-rule has continued. Until July 4, 1946, the islands were not entirely independent of the United States. The first independence proclamation by Aguinaldo was celebrated on July 4 until June 12, 1962, when Aguinaldo changed the date of Independence Day to that day.
Our independence has become a priceless commodity after centuries of being colonized. Since President Diosdado Macapagal altered the date from July 4, the day a treaty establishing the freedom of the Philippines from the United States was signed, to June 12, every year, Philippine Independence Day has been observed on June 12. Emilio Aguinaldo led the country's declaration of independence from Spain; hence the decision was made to commemorate that momentous occasion.
As we celebrate the country's 124th anniversary of declaring its independence, this Independence Day, let us remember the words and deeds of illustrious Filipinos who contributed significantly to the current state of liberty we enjoy. It's a special day for Filipinos because it honors the bravery and sacrifices of those who served and died in defense of our country. The present and future generations should be inspired by their courage and determination in the face of colonial oppression. These courageous actions should be valued as highly as the gift of sovereignty.
