Filipinos as Surviving Warriors

In my 15 years of existence living here in the Philippines , I am closely conversant with the disasters and contemporary issues that arise in my country. Numerous hazards have striked countless times in the past decades that still occur in this generation. Even before, the Philippines had always been a favorite target of natural disasters due to it’s location. Our country has a lot to offer but you would'nt want to know how prone it is to natural calamities. But hey, Welcome to the Philippines!. A country where everything can be possible. Come and explore with me.

According to Internet Public Library (IPL), Philippines is located along the Ring of Fire which earthquakes and typhoons normally occur within it’s premises. First and foremost, no one is to be blamed in this issue, it’s none of the government’s fault that these things happen. If you’re wondering why I mentioned these things is because whenever something bad happens, people point it all out on the government. They use the victim-blaming technique on them pointing out that it’s their fault why people experience such things. That’s a one harsh truth about the people of the  Philippines. Going back to the topic, In an article which came from Rappler, a leading digital media company here in the Philippines entitled “ As Filipino resilience gets exploited, netizens slam gov't disaster response” stated that In the span of just 3 weeks, the Philippines has faced the wrath of 5 tropical cyclones with overlapping landfalls and damages. These cyclones brought strong winds and extreme flood levels that wrecked crops, businesses, and homes. But more than this, it took the lives of Filipinos.Typhoon Ulysses revealed the gaps in the government's disaster response as desperate calls for rescue poured online, local governments appealed for rescue boats, and photos of submerged houses went viral on social media. Responding to these, Filipinos tapped into the bayanihan spirit to organize online and help those affected by the typhoon. But they refuse to romanticize this familiar act of resilience. For them, the time calls for Filipinos to demand for leadership and better, coordinated disaster response from the national government. “#UselessPH,” “Demand Accountability,” and “#NasaanAngPangulo” topped the Twitter Philippine trends as Filipinos online as President Rodrigo Duterte’s presence was missing again as Typhoon Ulysses ravaged parts of the country. This article was published last year when Typhoon Ulysses visited the Philippines. It’s clearly evident that netizens are in rage ‘cause they didn’t recieve any help from the Philippine Government when they were badly in need of help. This issue went viral on twitter and in some other platforms whereas people are signing for petitions against the President of the Philippines for not taking actions, for acting only when hundreds of people are already dead.  It was also mentioned in the article that the Filipino Resilience was being overly exploited. “ Netizens emphasized that Filipino resilience should not be glorified. Instead, the public demand accountability from those in power to create a better system to lessen the devastation the Philippines experiences during times of disaster.”

*This is how netizens view the President in times of Calamities. *

People don’t trust the government, they are only forced to follow them considering the fact that in the eyes of the law, they have the upper hand ‘cause they were chosen to lead the whole nation. It’s really alarming and devastating to know how my fellow countrymen suffered throughout the years, thousands of people die each year due to the unannounced occurrence of hazards in some places. Adding it up is the absence of action pf the Philippine Government in times of calamities and serious crisis. Human as we are, we are all imperfect. It’s just a matter of fact that we got blinded by their promises as leaders, that we believed they’re words more that what they actually did to make a change. The resiliency of the Philippines doesn’t only come from the victims but also with the help of responsible leaders who has good intentions to really make a change in the Philippines, not those leaders who only want to lead because of the money and power that they could get.

What would you choose Resilience or Selfishness? It’s a choice between saving others before yourself or just saving yourself from the danger leaving eveybody behind. Choose at your own risk.
